Description

In the US, bees pollinate 80% of flowering plants, which equals $15 billion in agricultural products each year, including more than 130 types of fruit, nuts, and vegetables. Bee populations are declining due to parasites, pesticides, habitat loss and disease. These losses have critical implications for food production and ecosystem health.

The goal of this program is to construct beehives that can make a difference in a variety of ways. The donation can support local bee farmers, serve as a sustainability learning tool for children through schools or educational organizations such as 4-H, or provide a means of income generation to help farmers in developing countries improve their standard of living via a tool for income augmentation.

As the program begins, our lead facilitator gives a brief presentation on how the donation of beehives will help the beneficiaries. They then explain that teams must compete in fun, bee-themed challenges to earn the materials needed to construct their colony wooden beehives. The challenges also earn teams points, as this is a competition! The challenges include a Honeycomb Puzzle, Waggle Dance Charades, Flower Hop and Bee Trivia. After the competition, teams work together to construct the hives.

This activity is customizable to meet your goals and objectives, as well as logistics. We can implement the “Beehive Building” activity in the following ways:

  • Philanthropic Donation Only – The base of all our programs; participants will learn about the cause and beneficiary and then get to work on the donation assembly.
  • Mental & Physical Challenges – Competitive program/cause themed challenge activities in which teams score points based on performance prior to assembling the donation.
  • Trivia Quiz Show – Teams earn donation materials through an interactive trivia game with cause and customizable company related content.

To close our events, we invite a representative from the beneficiary to express their gratitude and raise awareness on the impact their work has on the community. This establishes a direct connection to the cause and organization your team is supporting.

I learned that one must never underestimate the act of giving, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem. Building 30 beehives seemed like such a minor contribution. However little it may have seemed to us, it was an appreciated gift. We wished we could have had the materials to build 100 hives!
