Mel Simmons exuded life. She brought her energy into every room she ever entered, every life she  ever touched. Sadly, Mel, a career flight attendant, died from cancer almost 5 years to the day after she was diagnosed. But not before leaving her mark on every person who had the good fortune to cross her path.
During her treatment, Mel’s flight attendant friends would bring her souvenir bracelets from around the world. Mel delighted in gifting them to oncology nurses and fellow patients while she was in treatment. After she passed, people wore bracelets in her honor, and Mel’s bracelets became a symbol of friendship, support, love and community…and the Friends of Mel Foundation was born!
More than 1.2 million Americans develop cancer each year, which translates to a cancer diagnosis every 30 seconds. Friends of Mel Foundation works to empower people touched by cancer through conferences and by supporting cancer care facilities nationwide. In this activity, participants make one bracelet to donate locally to cancer care facilities associated with Friends of Mel, and if desired, make another to take one home to either wear themselves or share with a friend or family member touched by cancer. The event culminates with a representative from the local beneficiary cancer care facility addressing the group to say thanks and raise awareness.
