Description

Jobs and careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) fields are growing, but access to STEAM education is oftentimes limited. All too often, zip codes dictate the resources available for STEAM learning, which leaves many students left behind.

The goal of this activity is to provide materials for kids to learn about STEAM and alternative energy in a hands-on manner.

As the activity begins, our lead facilitator shares information about the importance of STEAM education and the beneficiary organization. Teams are then tasked with completing three activities: assembling their solar car, building a recycled car and walking an assembly line to pack “solar car kits” for donation with messages of STEAM encouragement.

Following the construction of their cars, the racing starts! Teams compete in elimination heats utilizing ramps and high powered flashlights, with the last team standing raising the checkered flag! Races consist of releasing the recycled car down a ramp until it hits the 8-foot line, at which point a second teammate uses a high powered flashlight to power the solar car to the finish line.

To close our events, we invite a representative from the beneficiary to express their gratitude and raise awareness on the impact their work has on the community. This establishes a direct connection to the cause and organization your team is supporting.
